I just finished my first cardio workout using my Heart Rate monitor in combination with interval training. I think I’m really out of shape. To be in the ‘fat burning’ zone, I must maintain 60%-70% of maximum heart rate. However, walking slowly elevated my heart rate beyond that range at the very beginning. So for the entire workout I ran for 3 minutes, and then walked until my HR came down into the zone, and then I kept it there for 2 minutes by walking…slowly. In 56 minutes, I covered 2.76 miles…that’s less than 3 Miles Per Hour! Damn that’s slow. I had an average HR of 149 which is 77% of my max, which is in the Cardio zone, not the fat burning zone. This is a predicament, I’ll have to walk…slower?
But hey, I did lose 3.6 pounds in 1 day! And 0.8% of my body fat, at this rate I’ll weight negative 140 pounds by the end of my 90 day sobriety kick!

it kills me how slow you have to go to burn fat. I had a very hard time doing that the last few times I got to go to the gym. Way to go on the first day. Keep that shit up! er, slow?

This is the predicament of which I spoke… you first have to re-train your heart to chill out when you are exercising, because it is now used to only beating fast when you spot a six pack and a box of twinkies. Don’t worry being in the cardio zone for the first few weeks. You will still be burning tons of fat.

Good job.
I ran today, too, but reading this entry makes me want to get a heart rate monitor and see where I’m at. Very curious. I’ve never worked out for a specific goal like this. Keep it up, totally.
